The Navajos are an Indian tribe occupying the South-Western part of the United States. Navajos refer to themselves as Dineh, meaning "the people." The Navajos came to the United States from and Canada, between the l3OO's and the 1600's. Navajos are a unique and powerful tribe, they have established their own ways of living, and techniques used day to day. From the houses they live in, called Hogan’s, which are made of mud, and have no windows. To their unique blankets, which they learned to make from their Pueblo neighbours. The Navajos are an independent and self sufficient and have made their own name to be recognized. For these reasons we can learn much from the Navajos.
The Navajos were great fighters. They made and used their own weaponry, to fight their wars. They mostly fought with bows and aero, made out of Mulberry, Locust, Maple, or Oak, and the bowstring was usually made out of deer sinew. They took pride in their weapons, and made decretive case, for their bows and aero. In 1846 many Navajos were forced to leave their homeland and travel by foot to a reservation called Bosque Redondo. When a Navajo person got ill, the Navajos people would perform a ceremony on the sick person.Hataalii (medicine man) would create a sand painting. When it was a daytime healing sand painting begun in the morning, and then ceremony is performed, and sand painting is destroyed before sunset. And for a night time healing, the sand painting was created after the sunset, and destroyed before the sun rise. They used herbal medicines, sang healing songs, and appropriate chants were chanted. The Navajos are excellent farmers. They raised corn, maize, beans and squash. The men hunted deer, antelope, and small game, while the women would collect nuts, and berries. Through raids on the Spanish, the Navajos acquired sheep, and goats. That not the only thing they have gotten from their neighbours. They also learned to weave, from their pueblo neighbours. They adopted wool, and became a sheep herding society. Their blankets are worth a lot of money now a days. And they are high in demand. The houses in which they live were unique to them. They were called Hogan’s. They were made out of mud, and logs, and looked like wooden igloos. There were no windows, and the door faced east, because that is where they believed the gods came from.
