o April 8 1887- war department established
§ Extensively modernized in the pursuit to be equal to civilized countries (i.e. America, Britain, etc.)
§ April 1 1890- war department upgraded to war ministry
§ 1894- Ministry of Defence formed
§ November 8 1931- navy joins Ministry of Defence
§ April 9 1937- air force established
§ Thai armed forces had undergone rigorous changes to become as advanced as those in civilized countries
· By the 1930s, Thai military officers were going to European schools to learn about new weapons, battle tactics, and political patterns

Transportation
- Elephants
o To cross areas like shallow rivers and lakes
o Used to carry handler and his/her belongings
- Tuk Tuks- 1940s
o Major form of transportation in Thailand
§ Useful for weaving in and out of traffic jams in Bangkok
o Thai version of Japanese delivery vehicle
o Named “tuk tuk” because of the clugging noise the engine made
§ Switched to LPG engines and the noise went away, but everyone still calls them tuk tuks
